Between the Lines aims to reflect on and facilitate innovative artistic research that engages specifically with questions of translation and mediation across social and cultural difference. It is a forum for artistic and academic dialogue that will invite 10 artists and 30 art students from Germany and South Africa into intensive exchange via two symposia and an exhibition.
The first symposium was held at the Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town (25-28 February, 2013), the second will be held at the Braunschweig University of Art (17-19 April, 2013). Between the Lines is funded by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research in the context of The German-South African Year of Science 2012/2013, an exchange between the two countries that aims to strengthen cooperation and create new networks. Members of the public are warmly invited to attend.
The gatherings bring together a variety of South Africa and Germany’s most significant artists, where they will share ideas and strategies relevant to the role that art can play in translating unknown experiences and creating mutual understanding across international borders. To what extent can the artist function as a translator and mediator in situations where cultural understanding may otherwise be hard to achieve?
A German delegation (5 artists based in Germany / 20 Braunschweig students) traveled to Cape Town to participate in the first conference at the Michaelis School of Fine Art in late February 2013. The participating artists are Candice Breitz and Asta Gröting (both professors at the Braunschweig University of Art), as well as Berlin-based artists Ulf Aminde, Yael Bartana and Ming Wong.
A South African delegation (5 artists based in South Africa / 10 Michaelis students) will travel to Braunschweig to participate in the second conference at the Braunschweig University of Art in April 2013. The participating artists are Penny Siopis (honorary professor at the Michaelis School of Fine Art), as well as Nandipha Mntambo, James Webb, Athi-Patra Ruga and Gabrielle Goliath. Senior Lecturer Andrew Lamprecht will accompany the 5 artists on their trip to South Africa, and will participate in the symposium in Braunschweig:

150 prospective students were invited to try out the direct application process for the degree programs of Fine Arts and ART.Education. On 28 & 29 January they could gain first practical artistic experience at the Braunschweig University of Art by working for two days with diverse materials and media in the studios and workshops at the Braunschweig University of Art. They could profit from the direct contact with the teachers, who themselves are practising artists, and received a personal view into the requirements and possibilities offered in the art degree programs at Braunschweig.
Jump Starters had the opportunity to apply for the upcoming semester 2013/14 without handing in a portfolio and to be invited to the entrance exam. By convincing the HBK professors with their work, they could also use the chance of being directly accepted into the study programme.

If you wish to study Fine Arts, ART.Education, Performing Arts, Communication Design, Industrial Design at the Braunschweig University of Art (HBK Braunschweig), a special application procedure must be undertaken for each of these courses of study!
This is also the case when you want to combine Communication Design as a minor subject with a major in Aesthetics & Art History or Media Studies or with a major at the Technical University Braunschweig (TU Braunschweig) in conjunction with a B.A. degree course of study.
The application procedure at the HBK Braunschweig is different than from other universities?
→ Because the HBK Braunschweig is an art university.
→ Because one works artistically, practically and creatively in many of the courses of study.
→ Because it must be “determined” before one begins to study here whether the applicant is suited for the selected course of study.
… for you this means:
→ You submit a portfolio with self-made examples of your own work in the original or present the documentation of artistic or creative projects you realised yourself.
→ We will get to know you personally during the artistic entrance examination and/or during the admission interview/admission examination.
→ Passing the artistic entrance examination allows you to study the subject of your choice.
→ The university places are not allocated according to the final secondary-school examination grade or a waiting period, but in accordance with the results of the artistic application procedure.
