Inside the library

Welcome to the sites of the Library of the HBK Braunschweig

The library is the center of literature and information services at the Braunschweig University of Art. We offer scientific literature in printed form and access to electronic information. Personal assistance concerning literature and information enquiries is also available to all our users.

The Library gives you access to more than 120,000 items pertaining to all subjects taught at the University; most of them can be borrowed. Collections are particularly strong in modern, contemporary art and design.

Our online catalogue offers records of all monographs, all periodicals and licensed databases.

For further information please ask a librarian: bibliothek@hbk-bs.de

Dear library users,

From Monday, 24 August 2020 we are expanding our library service. It will no longer be restricted to collecting pre-ordered media. Members and associates of the HBK will be able to book workplaces in the library reading rooms a day in advance for specific time slots. Please read the guidelines on ‘Booking a Workplace’ carefully. Unfortunately we are currently unable to offer this service to external users

The collection times for pre-ordered media remain the same for members and associates of the HBK and external library visitors during the vacation period (see below for details). Members and associates of the HBK, as well as external users, can collect media ordered the previous day at any time during library opening hours. Please read the guidelines on ‘Pre-ordering Media’ carefully.

All library users must observe the following rules:

• A mask covering mouth and nose must be worn at all times.
• A hand sanitiser station will be available at the entrance. Please sanitise your hands when entering the library.
• A maximum of four people can access the loans and collection areas at any one time. Markings on the floor will show you where to wait.
• You must present your library card when collecting your media.
Pre-ordering media

You can order media via the HBK online catalogue. Click on the catalogue item you want and a link will appear under the shelfmark in the column marked ‘loan status’ (‘Ausleihstatus’). Click on the link. This will take you to a page where you will be asked to enter your library card number (which you can find on your HBK card) and your library account password. Your order will then be confirmed or you will be told if the item is not available.

You can order media up to 23:59 (11:59 p.m.) the previous day for collection the next day (e.g., order on Sunday to collect on Monday, order on Monday to collect on Tuesday etc.). Each library account holder can order up to 20 items at a time. However, if you do not collect the items the following day, the order will lapse and they will be returned to the shelves.

Semester key texts and other media reserved for use in the reading room can be loaned only by members and associates of the HBK for a maximum of one day or one weekend. Unfortunately, only members and associates of the HBK can currently register as new library users.

Media can be returned at any time during library opening hours.

Booking a Workplace

12 workplaces are available from Monday to Thursday, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. and from 1:10 to 4:00 p.m. Workplaces should be booked via the HBK library online catalogue. The procedure is similar to the procedure for ordering media. Click on the following webpage:

https://opac.lbs-braunschweig.gbv.de/DB=3/SET=1/TTL=1/MAT=/NOMAT=T/CLK?IKT=1016&TRM=Arbeitsplatz-Reservierung
Click on the link.

This will take you to a page where you will be asked to enter your library card number (which you can find on your HBK card) and your library account password. Your order will then be confirmed or you will be told if the workplace/slot is not available.

You can book a workplace up to 11:59 p.m. on the previous day for use the next day (e.g., book on Sunday to use on Monday, book on Monday to use on Tuesday etc.). If you do not use the workplace you have booked during the timeslot specified, you will not be able to access it that day.

When you arrive at the library to access your workplace, you must first register at the loans desk. Staff will inform you of the regulations you need to know about and what hygiene precautions you need to take. You also have access to the reading rooms during your timeslot. Two computers are available for research purposes. You are welcome to bring your own laptop. A scanner is available, but the copy-printer cannot be used. The workplace computers and photocopiers are in the large pool room at the ZKI. If you need to use them, please speak to library staff. Please note that the lockers in front of the mediatheque are currently unavailable until further notice.

If you are having any problems ordering media or booking workspaces, or should you have any further questions, please contact us at bibliothek@hbk-bs.de with details.

We are grateful for your support in adhering to these regulations, which are designed to help protect us all during this difficult time. The situation is unprecedented for everyone, including library staff, and we appreciate your understanding and help.

Keep healthy and stay safe!
Dr. Frauke Stiller and the library team

Please observe our hygiene precautions!

E-books held by the HBK library

The HBK library’s e-book collection is updated regularly. It contains most of the current publications from the imprint of Transcript Publishing, but also holds a number of books from De Gruyter, Birkhäuser and Böhlau.

E-books are included in the library catalogue and for those working within the campus network, can be searched for in the online catalogue.
Members of the HBK can also use a VPN (virtual private network) connection to log into the HBK network from their home computer. The connection is encrypted. To set up the VPN, please follow the computing service (ZKI) guidelines, which can be found in their wiki.
