Communication Design – Bachelor of Arts

Do you wish to competently participate in solving socially relevant questions with creative means and on the basis of a contentual discussion? Are you interested in shaping communicational processes? Do you wish to contribute to the conveyance of pictorial process under social premises by means of convincing design solutions?

If so, the six-semester B.A. degree course in Communication Design at the
HBK Braunschweig provides you with the opportunity to do so: On the basis of a two-semester basic course of study you select from the following areas of concentration: graphic design, book design/typography, illustration, photography and media design/multimedia. You will work conceptually and creatively in practical modules and study projects. Your practical work will take place in analogue and digital workshops for example for typography, printmaking, photography or bookbinding. You will have a workplace at your disposal in the university’s workshops.
You will be introduced to contents of design history, iconography, media

Communication Design can be studied as a major or minor. As a major, it can
be combined with the following minors: Time-Based Media, Industrial Design,

The B.A. is a profession-qualifying degree. It simultaneously qualifies you to
continue your studies in design-oriented and academic M.A. degree courses

Communication Arts – Master of Arts

The Master’s degree in Communication Arts focuses on broadening and deepening an autonomous artistic creative position through intensely supervised project work.

You select one of three different main focuses:

Narrative Environments concentrates on the designing of interactive media and the filmic post-production of 3D animation from editing to designing effects. Visual Argumentation with the areas photography and illustration is devoted to the conception, creative implementation and transmission of photographic or graphic pictorial worlds.
Knowledge Communication with the areas book design/typography and graphic design concentrates on the development of comprehensive design concepts in all fields of two-dimensional communications.

All specializations enable a high percentage of independent project work and your own creative artistic activities. You will find the support to realize your project ideas in the well-furnished workshops. Accompanying specialized design courses deepen your understanding of the theory, observation and application of design.

By continuously developing your abilities in project presentation and thinking within interdisciplinary contexts, you will have the best prerequisites to assume leadership functions in the fields of communication and design after completing your studies.

The successful conclusion of the Master’s programme in Communication Arts
fulfils the formal requirements for a further qualification with a doctorate in
design.
