TEACHING DESIGN, LEARNING DESIGN: TOOLS, GOALS AND THE CREATIVE LONGTERM PERSPECTIVE

What are the requirements for state of the art and future design study and
research? Making room for innovation is one of the main tasks of modern
education. The Bauhaus-idea is still interesting for teaching Design Basics, however barely a century later, the parameters of design teaching have changed. These changes range from materials, production processes, technological resources, and digital possibilities, to the growing responsibility of the designer in an information society. One of the most important aspects in this connection is the interplay of digital and analogue content. In the course of my national and international teaching experiences in Diploma-, Bachelor- and Master-studies, a method for developing the curriculum and formulating concepts has crystallized
which has enabled me to increase the transparency of the project-oriented part of the course, ‘Design Basics’. In my opinion, this method can be successfully transferred to other fields of design teaching. The opportunity to freely develop the Temporary Architecture course at the ESDI (Escuela Superior de Diseño) Barcelona, Spain was a good preparation for the challenge of completely redefining the form and content of the Design Basics course at the HBK Braunschweig. Personal experience gained during my studies - amongst others in international BA and MA courses - proved extremely useful.
