Art History and Aesthetics (Bachelor of Arts)

Art History and Aesthetics (Bachelor of Arts)

The study of Art History and Aesthetics at the HBK Braunschweig stands out from other degree programmes in that it forms an integral part of a broader University of Art structure, bridging the gap between theory and practice and between various historical perspectives. While contemporary art plays a central role, its study is based on a solid grounding in the history of
art and knowledge of the historical and methodological background necessary to understand the subject.
A mixture of lectures, seminars and practical exercises provides students with essential skills in academic study and critical thinking, and the ability to apply this to historical perspectives, while at the same time students develop a special awareness of the relationship between art and language.
The degree programme gives students the chance to experience at first-hand how artists and designers work in the HBK Braunschweig’s studios and workshops. As a student, you will be encouraged and expected to participate actively in conferences, artist talks and film screenings at the HBK  Braunschweig. Partnerships with regional museums and exhibition spaces will provide you with an opportunity to learn more about the various career paths open to you as a graduate, while the flexible degree structure makes it easy to integrate a period of study abroad or internships into your degree programme. Art History and Aesthetics can be studied at Bachelor level as either a major or minor subject.

What happens after graduation?

Depending on your chosen minor subject, you can build professional experience in a variety of fields with galleries, exhibition spaces, auction houses or publishing. A successfully completed Bachelor’s degree is required should you wish to continue to a Master’s degree (with the possibility of pursuing a PhD degree) in Art History and Aesthetics either at the HBK Braunschweig or another university
