Yoko Arisaka: Epistemologies of Ignorance | What We Don’t Know About Race and Racism

While liberalism, with its ideals of equality, autonomy, respect, and dignity, has made considerable progress in eliminating inequality in democratic societies, experiences of everyday racism still remain a reality for many. Through the concept of »epistemology of ignorance«, we can identify and understand the inherent paradox of liberalism that actually makes it ineffective in addressing everyday racism. Against the historically formed »ignorance« about the workings of racism this lecture offers an alternative framework to consider and criticize racism.
